Opening lecture by Curator Dr. Masami Toku-Associate
Professor of Art and Art History, California State University, Chico.
In conjunction with the exhibition ÒGirl Power! GirlsÕ Comics from
JapanÓ, Curator Dr. Masami Toku will present an opening lecture on Tuesday,
January 30th at 6:30 pm.
Dr. Toku is the impetus behind ÒGirl Power!Ó and has been touring across
North and South America with the exhibition. Dr. Toku will provide an overview of the works exhibited and
examine the individual creators of the comics to provide an insight into the
development and impact of Japanese GirlsÕ comics, not just in Japan, but around
the world.
ÒGirl Power! GirlsÕ Comics from JapanÓ features the work of twenty
three artists, both male and female, from the past sixty years. These artists
cover the dawn of girlsÕ comics and give hints as to what paths the comics may
take in the future.
The exhibition will be displayed at the JICC gallery January 29th to March 16th, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed February 19th.
