Girls’ Comics from Japan

Opening lecture by Curator Dr. Masami Toku-Associate Professor of Art and Art History, California State University, Chico.

In conjunction with the exhibition “Girl Power! Girls’ Comics from Japan”, Curator Dr. Masami Toku will present an opening lecture on Tuesday, January 30^th at 6:30 pm. Dr. Toku is the impetus behind “Girl Power!” and has been touring across North and South America with the exhibition. Dr. Toku will provide an overview of the works exhibited and examine the individual creators of the comics to provide an insight into the development and impact of Japanese Girls’ comics, not just in Japan, but around the world.

“Girl Power! Girls’ Comics from Japan” features the work of twenty three artists, both male and female, from the past sixty years. These artists cover the dawn of girls’ comics and give hints as to what paths the comics may take in the future.

The exhibition will be displayed at the JICC gallery January 29^th to March 16^th, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed February 19^th.
